This enduring activity consists of a recorded session from the 2025 Rheumatology Nurses Society Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX. The content focuses on pediatric vasculitis, including Kawasaki disease and IgA vasculitis, and highlights distinctions between pediatric and adult systemic vasculitides. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic evaluation, treatment considerations, medication-related differences in children, and the psychosocial and educational needs of pediatric patients. The activity underscores the essential role of the rheumatology nurse in coordinated, longitudinal care.
Upon completion of this activity, learners will better be able to:
- Identify vasculitis entities primarily seen in children versus adults.
- Describe diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of Kawasaki disease.
- Describe diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of IgA vasculitis.
- Identify differences in medication side-effects between adults and children with chronic systemic vasculitis.
- List special services that children with vasculitis may need in the school setting.
The target audience for this forum includes registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), licensed practical and vocational nurses (LPNs/LVNs), and other healthcare professionals who are engaged in clinical practice, education, research, and advocacy for the care of adult and pediatric patients with rheumatic diseases.
The content of this education will also be applicable to healthcare professionals new to rheumatology, as well as students considering entering the field of rheumatology.
